New Stations pop up from time to time around Great Britain. Below we keep any eye on how things are going with them!
Bermuda Park: Opened 18th January 2016.
Bermuda Park was one of two stations to open on the Coventry to Nuneaton line, the other been Coventry Arena station. With an average of only 60 passengers a day it is one of the least used new stations in the last 10 years! Sadly a station that should be performing better. I suspect the issue here is more to do with reliability issues. West Midlands Railways have on several occasions had to suspend services on this line due to lack of rolling stock. Sadly I suspect this has contributed to people working on the industrial estate not been able to trust the railways. There is also a frequent bus service in the area which is possibly more appealing and reliable for workers in the area.
Meridian Water: Opened 3rd June 2019.
Built just to the south and in place of the former Angel Road station, Meridian Water is a great example of planning for the future. It is currently used by an average of 583 passengers a day. This is expected to grow to upwards of 10,000 passengers per day when the redevelopment of the local area is complete. I guess this is one to keep an eye on and see what happens in the future.
The Elizabeth Line: Opened 24th May 2022
Four years late opening, but it sure as heck looks like it was worth the wait! With over 77 million people using the new stations on the line it is pretty clear that it is a success! The most used of the new stations on the line is Tottenham Court Road with just under 35 million passengers in less than a year using the station. This is followed by Bond Street which had just over 19 million passengers in under 6 months (Opened later than the others).
Barking Riverside: Opened 18th July 2022
Like Meridian Water this is a station that has been built with the future in mind! The area surrounding has planning for over 10,000 homes to be built. It will be a few years before we see the full potential of Barking Riverside fulfilled.
Reston: Opened 23rd May 2022
The white elephant of all the new stations! With an average of only 39 passengers a day this has got to get the award for the least pointless new station on the network. Ok, so admittedly it's not been helped by the poor reliability of Transpennine Express. But even if it had a reliable frequent service I honestly don't see this station ever getting to a point where its getting enough daily passengers to warrant it! Ticket prices are rather steep (£22.30 TPE ONLY off peak return) just isn't an attractive option. Especially given most people that use this station will be driving from the surrounding area to use it! They will just drive all the way to Edinburgh/Newcastle. The integrated transport isn't the best either, There is only 10 buses per day that call at the station making onward travel by bus not all the good. At least the footbridge is quite spectacular to look at!
