The newest tram network in Great Britain. The Edinburgh trams started operation on the 31st May 2014.
Proposals for a tram network in Edinburgh was first proposed in 2001. There was originally 3 lines proposed, one which would go from Newbridge in the West, another that would go to Newcraighall in the south, and a loop line which would serve the northern suburbs of Edinburgh. All three of the lines would serve the city centre.
When the tram network opened in Edinburgh it only operated between the Airport and York Place. This is how it remained until 7th June 2023 when services started operating to Newhaven. As part of the extension to the network it saw the closure of York Place. This was replaced by Picardy Place just a few 100 meters down the road. Picardy Place was joined by 7 other new stations!
There is the potential for extensions to be made, it has been recently voiced that extensions will be made from Haymarket to Granton and potentially onto Newhaven to create a loop in the network. There is also the potential for services to extend from Ingliston Park & Ride out to the village of Newbridge.
Edinburgh trams is a network that really impresses me when ever I go on it. With several proposals on the table, it could in the future be one of the best in the UK!
