The Manchester Metrolink is a light rail network operating in Greater Manchester. There are 99 stops on this network, making it the largest metro network in Great Britain outside of London!
The network first started operation between Bury & Manchester Victoria on the old heavy rail alignment on 6th April 1992. Later the same month (27th April) services started running on the streets of the city centre through to what today is Deansgate-Castlefield. The Altrincham line, again mostly using old heavy rail alignments, started running on 15th June 1992. The branch line to Piccadilly station opened 5 days later on the 20th June 1992.
The Metrolink network next extended on 6th December 1999 when services started operating on the new Eccles line from Manchester City Centre. For a short while services only ran from the city centre to Broadway in Salford Quays due to the street running part of the Eccles Line not quite been completed on time. Full operation to Eccles commenced on 9th January 2001.
Between October 2009 & March 2020 there were 5 new lines built: The Oldham & Rochdale line, The East Manchester Line to Ashton-under-Lyne, The South Manchester Line that ran to Didsbury, the Airport line (which as it suggests, runs to Manchester Airport) and finally there was the Trafford Park line which runs to the Trafford Centre.
The current network in use today is made up of 8 lines which serve 99 stops. The network uses a mixture of purpose built routes, old heavy rail routes and street running making the network very good for getting people close to where they want to be.
The Metrolink is the only UK tram network to not use low floor platforms on the network. The reason for this is that several stops on the network was inherited from the British Rail days. Using high floor platforms allowed for minimal upgrades needed to the stations.
Future proposed extensions for the Metrolink network include tram-train services between Rochdale & Bury. Initial funding for this is currently been used to investigate the possibilities of this. Other proposed extensions include extending the line from East Didsbury to Stockport and also Stockport to Manchester Victoria converting the limited used line through Denton.
