The Nottingham tram network as we know it today first started to be planned around 1990. The first route planned was the Hucknall route. The original plans for this was to send it in a tunnel under the Victoria Centre. By the end of 1991 the plans to go under the Victoria Centre was dropped and they used the route as it is today through the city centre!
In March 2004 the first line opened running from the north end of Station Street, near to Nottingham station, through the city centre. At Highbury Vale the line splits into two giving two terminus stops at this end of the city, one at Pheonix Park and the other at Hucknall where the tram stop was built right next to the national rail station allowing for great integrated transport!
The new line was so successful, there was a very strong case for a new line to be built! Thankfully though, in 2003, before the first line was even opened the council had started consultation on building a second line which would serve the urban areas to the south and west of the city.
The new line to Toton Lane & Clifton South opened on 25th August 2015. Along with the new line was the relocation of the Nottingham station tram stop. It was relocated to be on a new bridge that went over the railway station!
The completion of the new lines saw the start of through running across the city. Hucknall to Toton and Phoenix Park to Clifton was the two services that would run along the four lines.
Over the years there has been several proposals to extend lines and build new lines. Some of the more recent proposals:
