How I got my Northern 195111 on the Leven Viaduct photo
As someone who has always enjoyed travelling and seeing all the different parts of the country, I can tell you, it is easy to miss what is on your doorstep, and even if you know what is on your doorstep, you can quite often end up taking it for granted! That is most definitely the case for me... If there has been anything good to come out of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is that I have been forced to explore all that is on my doorstep.
As the country was dealing with the lockdown, I spent the first few months stuck at home, furloughed from work, and spending my days wondering when/if this lockdown would end. As time went on, I decided it was time to take my daily exercise a little further away. A 45 minute walk from my house is the Leven estuary. Having never previously visited here I decided it would be a good place to explore and see what sort of photos I could get at the viaduct.
The first time I went down to the viaduct I went onto the north side of the viaduct for some photos, these photos turned out pretty good, but I quickly decided shots from the other side would be better. Not wearing the correct footwear to be climbing over the rocks, I decided to leave it for another day.
A few days later, Northern unveiled their new livery, the NHS train, Key workers supporting Key workers. I dropped Northern a DM and they told me that the unit would be operating an empty coaching stock movement between Barrow-in-Furness and Liverpool. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to head back down to the viaduct for some more photos. I ended up spending about 4 hours there taking photo's!
The whole area is splendid for taking photos of trains crossing the viaduct, it has now become my go to place locally for taking scenic photos. The rock pools, the Leven estuary, the big sky always make the photos look splendid, even when I put zero effort into a photo, which believe it or not, most of my photos are effortless, just point and snap!
As the tide came in I realised I wouldn't be able to stay down by the water edge, with 195111 having not yet passed I decided to head up to where the old signal box used to be. This is where I got my photo from, a few dummy shots of 156s and I was all set, had my location and angle all set for the photo.
Now to get one great photo, I usually take many shots that lead to the one that I share. Below is a gallery of photos that led to the one, I originally shared!
