New trains for the North West
Mr Mayor of Manchester... Did you enjoy attending the launch of the 195s?
On Monday 1st July Northern entered nine 195 units into passenger services operating a variety of services around the North West. Now after 3 weeks I give my opinion on these units. I could give this opinion in one word... Marvelous. But what sort of blog would that be, so here is a more in depth review.
After a full day at work i jumped on the 1823 service from Ulverston to Lancaster on a ex Scotrail 156. I originally thought i could change at Lancaster straight onto a 195 for Windermere. Wrong, with the latest timetable change most Manchester to Windermere trains now run non stop through Lancaster. I'm sure there is a very good reason for this, personally i can't see the reason.
Anyway, after a quick hop up the WCML to Oxenholme I wait for my first 195 to arrive, and indeed it did, 195117 arrived (Pictured below)
. My first impression of them was WOW!!! What a upgrade. After years of class 142 and class 150 units rattling around Cumbria it was a refreshing change to have a fresh, brand new trains to travel on.
On board the seats are comfy, the carriages are spacious and bright, the train has good wifi, the toilet is very spacious and it's got a proper lock on it, a handle, not a button like some modern units.
After an explore i hopped off at Burneside where i had a little wonder about the village and then waited for the same unit to return. After boarding at Burneside i then headed to Kendal, then back down the line to Windermere. At Windermere I headed down into the village to get some dinner/tea/supper from Popeyes burger and kebab shop. Burger was delicious, even if a bit expensive, nearly £8 for Burger and chips. Anyway, back to the station to start my journey home.
On the journey home i tested the WiFi by using my laptop to upload some photos to twitter and Facebook. I can confirm it managed this with no problem.
So, the issues...
As with everything that's new there is bound to be teething problems...
- On the first evening in service i witnessed doors not opening when they should, one woman who wanted to get off at Kendal had to go all the way to Windermere and then back to Kendal before she could get off.
- Also on the first evening there was two occasions where doors would randomly close on people while boarding and alighting. Having used these units several times it's good to see this these issues appear to of been resolved.
- The Wifi, although it's good to start with, after you've used your limit it becomes really slow,Neanderthals developed toolsquicker than a picture loaded on Twitter.
- Mr Mayor of Manchester... Did you enjoy attending the launch of the 195s??? I look forward to reading all about your attendance at the launch ;-)
Thanks for taking the time to read my blog.
Until next time
Stuart :)
